With all the extra guests over during the holiday season, your plumbing can really suffer over the holidays. Not only are there more people showering and flushing the toilet, the holidays also have tendency to create a lot of gravies, grease, and rich foods that all too often end up down the drain. Since no one wants a plumbing emergency on Christmas Eve, here are a few tips for keeping everything running smoothly and preventing drain clogs.

Hair Snares & Food Catchers are thin pieces of mesh or plastic that fit into your drains. They create a net that catches debris like hair or bits of food and stop them from flowing down your drain. When you’ve finished washing dishes, simply empty the food trap directly into your compost or garbage bin. As for the hair snare in your shower, you’ll probably find it easier to clean if you let it dry out first. The dry hair is easy to remove with a hair brush rake.

Scrape Plates.

Before you do the dishes, make sure everyone scrapes their plate into the garbage. This will help prevent grease and foods finding their way down the plumbing where they inevitably create clogs. This is a great job for the younger kids who can take scraping every last bit of food very seriously. Remember to also scrape out pots and other cooking dishes. Use a spatula to get every last drop of delicious gravy into the gravy boat instead of down your drain!
