Summer is just around the corner, and that often means highs well above 30°C for those of us living in Alberta. For many Calgarians, this is a problem. Their home isn’t shielded from the sun by large trees, and they haven’t invested in AC. Their house’s interior temperature can begin to hit 30°C as well, and this makes it very difficult to sleep and stay cool. Most Calgarians already know that they should open windows at night and shut them as soon as temperatures begin to rise in the morning. They also know to keep their blinds shut to block out light and heat from the sun, but what else can be done?

Help Air Circulate from the Basement.

Most Calgarians can agree that the basement is always the coolest part of their home. Try to keep the door to your basement open and work with an expert to help air move freely throughout your home. Air movement from fans or vents helps to whisk away sweat and make you feel cooler.

Call Efficiency Alberta.

A big contributor to heat in your home is inefficiency. Incandescent lights, for example, waste more energy creating heat than they use to actually produce light. LED lights, however, waste almost no energy and produce very little heat.

Right now, Efficiency Alberta is offering a no-charge program. You fill out a form to register, and they’ll schedule a meeting with you at your home. Then they’ll arrive at your house, inspect each room for efficiency problems, and install many new, high-efficiency products, like LED light bulbs, to replace your old inefficient products for free. Efficiency Alberta is a provincial initiative to help Albertans waste less energy, so it’s literally as simple as signing up. The inspection and the products they provide are entirely free, and there really isn’t a catch other than you need to be at home for your scheduled inspection.

Start Grilling!

One of our favourite keep-cool tips is to stop using your stove and start using the barbeque! When you use your stove or oven, you’re adding a lot of heat and energy to your home. While your roast bakes or even after the oven is off, all that generated heat has to go somewhere. It radiates out from your stove and heats up the ambient air temperature of your kitchen and home. That’s why one of the best ways to help your house to stay cooler is to not turn on your stove at all. Instead, plan meals that can be eaten cold or barbequed. They’re more fun anyways.

Are you struggling to keep your home the right temperature? We recommend talking with an expert. Perhaps your furnace is malfunctioning and running during the day. Or maybe your air vents need some work.
