Toilets are one of those things that we have to be able to rely on. And for the most part, toilets are quite low maintenance and have a relatively long lifespan. This is good news for everyone because when nature calls, your toilet had better be in commission. But if waiting for your toilet to be completely broken isn’t ideal, how do you know you need a new toilet?

It’s Always Needing Repairs.

There are a lot of parts that can go wrong on a toilet. From the handle to the flapper or the fill valve, each little repair is fairly affordable on its own, but if your toilet constantly has a new problem and needs more work, it may be time to simply replace it. In general, we suggest doing some simple cost analysis. Take a look at how much it would cost to get a new, water-efficient toilet and then look at how much your toilet is currently costing you in repairs. It’s up to you to decide when the old toilet is costing you more than it’s worth.

It Clogs All the Time.

One of the most annoying things a toilet can do is clog up every time you use it. There are couple reasons your toilet may be clogging all the time. Assuming you don’t have a toddler flushing entire rolls of toilet paper, you likely either have a physical clog in the plumbing or your old toilet simply doesn’t have a great design. Newer toilets are designed to reduce clogs by allowing the flushed wastes to more easily move from the toilet into the plumbing system. If there isn’t a problem with your pipes, the toilet is likely the issue.

It Uses Too Much Water.

You may not know this, but new toilets use far less water than older models. As we mentioned in the previous paragraph, new toilets have better designs that help facilitate the movement of wastes from the bowl into the plumbing system. This means not only do they work better than old toilets, but they also use less than a third of the water. If you have an old toilet, it’s not just clogging more often, it’s using a whole lot of water.

Cracked Porcelain or Other Damage.

We’ve met many Calgarians who believed a crack in the bowl or tank of their toilet was merely an aesthetic concern. But this is not the case, and many of them learned this the hard way. Even if the crack doesn’t appear to go fully through the porcelain, you’re sitting on a ticking time bomb. With time, the crack will fail and you will very quickly find you have water everywhere flooding your home. Cracked porcelain is one of the most obvious signs that you really do need to replace the toilet — and soon.
