Automated irrigation systems are extremely convenient. Unfortunately, our cold Canadian winters mean they do require a little maintenance each spring. Now that the worst of winter is behind us, you may be feeling the itch to get working in your flower beds and garden. While we don’t recommend turning on your sprinkler system until the ground has thawed and the risk of snow is minimal (May Long Weekend is usually about right), we encourage you to pick up the phone today and schedule a professional to turn on and inspect the system.
Ensure Main Water Supply is On.
In order to protect your pipes from bursting during the winter, you’ll have had to turn your outdoor water supply off and blown out the pipes. Logically, come spring you’ll need to do the reverse. If you have one of our plumbers come help get your irrigation system summer-ready, we’ll ensure the ground is thawed and your pipes will be safe from bursting. We’ll also check that the main water supply is on and working correctly.
Check for Leaks.
Most Calgarians schedule their sprinkler system to start early in the morning or late in the evening. This is ideal for your lawn, but it makes it tricky to notice if there are any leaks in your system. Cracks and damage to your lines can occur thanks to Calgary’s yo-yo, thaw-freeze climate, so it’s best if you can check for problems early. Save water and money by having a professional inspect the lines for leaks at the beginning of spring.
Identify Needed Repairs.
Repairing an automated irrigation system typically requires both plumbing and electrical knowledge, so we don’t recommend that homeowners or businessowners tackle a damaged sprinkler system themselves. Instead, during your spring inspection, your technician should point out any busted heads, leaky lines, and other necessary maintenance.
Automated sprinkler systems are great. These modern, high efficiency systems are able to detect how moist your soil is in order to deliver just the right amount of water to your lawn. This helps your lawn stay beautiful while preventing water run-off. However, your irrigation system can only save you money if it’s running optimally. Which is why it’s important to have it annually inspected for leaks and other problems. Our team can help. Call us today.
