Planning the Perfect Stay at Home Valentine’s Day

Oh the weather outside is frightful!

Well okay, Christmas is over, but no one’s told Calgary’s weather. And with February often being one of the coldest months in the year, a Valentine’s Day date that requires going out into a blizzard in order to sit at an over occupied restaurant can seem less than ideal.

Cook a Favourite Dinner at Home.

Going out for food is fun, but it’s hard to beat a favourite, home-cooked meal. If one of you typically does the cooking, maybe have the non-chef partner plan dinner for a change. Or you can cook a special meal together. Even the least experienced chefs, can be a helpful chopper and dicer. If you’re both novices, that can make the experience of cooking a fancy dinner together even more fun, and if dinner doesn’t turn out, at least you’ll have a few laughs. Before you start, make sure to set yourselves up for success by buying your groceries ahead of time and ensuring all taps and drains are working properly.

Activities.

Dinner likely won’t take all night, so you should consider what you’d like to do after you’ve eaten. If the kids are with grandma (or you don’t have any!), you’ll have all evening to dance in your living room, watch a new movie on netflix, and reconnect with one another romantically. You can light candles, turn the lights off, and run a luxurious hot bath (maybe with bubbles or milk bath powder!) that you can both enjoy together. If your tub is too small for two adults, consider having a candle lit shower instead. If the kids are at home, pick out a movie to keep them occupied for a little while, and choose activities that allow you to hear them if they need you.

Plan Ahead & Be Ready to Improvise.

Sometimes things go wrong. Your fancy dinner may burn, your sink or tub might fail, or your child may end up sick or injured just before (or during) your date. So whether you’re enjoying a date outside the house or at home, it’s a good idea to plan ahead. Make sure you set up your child’s sitter as far in advance as possible. If your meal requires a special ingredient, get it ahead of time. If your plumbing or furnace has been acting up, call your favourite Calgary plumber and furnace expert to come have a look at them both. And remember that even if things don’t go according to plan, you’re still spending the evening together, and that’s all that really matters.
