Calgary is a fairly young city. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t many seniors or even baby boomers who are beginning to feel their age. At the Plumbing Paramedics, we get the privilege of working with many older Calgarians who are losing some flexibility or mobility, but who are far from ready to give up the freedom of independent living. One tool that can really help these seniors is a walk-in bathtub.
You Don’t Need to Stand.
While showering is an option for some folks who just lack the flexibility of getting their leg over the side of the tub, not everyone is comfortable or safe standing for several long minutes on the slippery shower floor. In that case, a bathtub is the safest and most convenient option for regular hygiene. Conventional bathtubs, however, may not be a better solution than just showering. That’s where walk-in bathtubs come into play.
A Walk-in Bathtub has a door in the side. In general, the door pushes into the tub, so that the person can simply walk in. But there are tubs with doors that pull out, and that can be more convenient in some situations, such as for seniors who require the use of a wheelchair. Once you are comfortably seated in the tub, you close the door. The seal is water tight, so you can progress with your bath as normal. One inconvenience of walk-in tubs is that you must get in before you can start the water and remain inside as the water drains. This can lead to chilliness, so try to keep the bathroom warm and have a large, dry towel nearby.
Choosing the Right Tub.
Any walk-in tub that you consider should have a lifetime “leak-proof” door seal warranty. They should also include a lengthy warranty on the tub itself and any other systems. Before you go out and buy a new tub, make sure to measure your space. Walk-in tubs are usually taller than conventional bathtubs, but you should be able to find one the right length and width to fit where your current bathtub is. And remember, if the door pulls out instead of pushing in, you’ll need enough room in the bathroom for the door to swing open.
A walk-in bathtub isn’t for everyone. But for Calgarians facing challenges with mobility, it can be a powerful tool in establishing their independence over their body and cleanliness. We’re always happy to help Calgarians feel more confident in their homes and in their plumbing. Give us a call today, and let us help install your new walk-in bathtub!
