Earth Day is one of our favourite holidays here at the Plumbing Paramedics. Most members of our team enjoy spending time outside either in the Rockies or in one of the many parks around the city, and we feel it’s important to be good role models for environmentalism. As part of a plumbing team, that means encouraging Calgarians to invest in water-efficient appliances.

Save Water.

Nowadays, there seems to be a nearly inexhaustible list of water-efficient appliances available for consumers. High efficiency toilets, showerheads, dishwashers, laundry machines, faucets, and more are all available for Albertans who want to do their part in conserving water. But there’s more to saving water than just choosing a high-efficiency appliance. Showers should be kept to under 8 minutes, or it’s better to take a bath. And when it comes to the dishwasher and laundry machine, make sure you’re only running full (but not over-crowded) loads.

Save Money.

Here at the Plumbing Paramedics, we’re fortunate to work with Albertans who chose to do the right thing because of their strong sense of personal ethics. But even if making green choices isn’t a priority for you, saving water means saving money — and that’s one thing everyone can agree is a plus. Running your washing machine or dishwasher when it’s full and not overloaded also saves you money. This is because you’ll be using less water by running the machines fewer times, and by not over-using the appliances, they’ll break down less frequently. Another great way to save money on your utilities is to track down any leaks. You can easily tell if your home has a leak by checking the water metre before you leave for work. If the metre has gone up and no one was home for several hours, you have a leak!

Take Earth Day as your annual reminder that we Canadians owe it to our kids to keep our country looking clean and beautiful. Our sprawling prairies, vast sources of freshwater, and towering forests should be available for the next generation to enjoy, and that means taking care of our environment. Using less water and energy whenever possible are just part of doing the right thing for our kids.
