Part of living in Canada is the expectation that your heating bill will likely skyrocket as winter settles in for its long stay. However, while it’ll almost certainly rise a bit — after all no one uses their furnace mid july — there are ways to help your furnace run more efficiently and to reduce the amount of energy and money spent this winter.
Save Around 4% off your Heating Bill by… turning your furnace down 2 degrees and throwing on a sweater. Winter is a great excuse to wear cozy, knit sweaters around the house anyways. You’ll save money on your heating bill and be comfy! Similarly you can leave your house sitting around 15°C at night. You’ll likely find it’s actually easier to fall asleep when the temperature is lower, and if you toss an extra blanket at the foot of the bed, you’re sure to keep warm all night. Another great time to lower the house’s temperature is when you’ll be gone for several hours. If you work 9-5 and don’t expect anyone home until 4pm at the earliest, turn the house down to 15°C or 16°C. If you have an automatic thermostat, you can just program it in, if not, have the first person home turn the furnace back up. After coming in from -10, the lower temperature in the house still feels warm.
Insulate for Efficiency. A great way to reduce the load on your furnace is to be sure that your weather stripping is in good shape. Make sure to check around your windows for drafts. Incenses or a candle is a good way to find pesky, little drafts. Where the flame or smoke flickers, you likely have a draft. In your basement, spiderwebs are often a good indicator of a leak. Spiders aren’t going to spin webs where they’re unlikely to find food. Another important way to increase furnace efficiency is to make sure you change the furnace’s filter frequently. This should be changed a minimum of every 3 months, but every 1-2 months is better.
Nobody likes to pay high energy bills. Keeping your home more energy efficient is one of the best ways to avoid them. Turning down your thermostat and making sure your house is well insulated are great ways to move towards a greener home.
